Construction of the Kurunegala–Galewela section of the Central Expressway could begin before the end of 2026, according to Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena.
This section forms the first phase of Section 4 of the Central Expressway (CEP 4). Once completed, Section 4 is planned to extend from Kurunegala to Dambulla.
Before construction can start, authorities must complete the required land acquisition work.
Land Acquisition Moves Into Focus
Deputy Minister Gunasena chaired a meeting on October 15 to discuss the land acquisition process.
Officials focused on speeding up the work and coordinating activities between the government institutions involved.
Representatives from the Road Development Authority, Ministry of Lands, Survey Department and Valuation Department attended the meeting.
Officials from the Department of Archaeology and the Forest Conservation Department also took part.
Local Areas Included in Preparations
Members of Parliament Sunil Biyanwila, Sujeewa Dissanayake and M.K.M. Aslam joined the discussion.
Local authority representatives from Rideegama, Ibbagamuwa, Galewela and Dambulla also attended.
The government aims to complete the required preparations quickly so construction of the first phase can begin within 2026.
For people living along this section, land acquisition is now one of the key steps before construction starts.
