Parliament to Debate Motor Traffic, Defence and Women’s Empowerment From September 8th

Parliament will meet from September 8 to 11, with lawmakers set to debate changes to motor traffic rules, defence legislation and women’s empowerment.

The Committee on Parliamentary Business approved the four-day sitting schedule at a meeting chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.

The first major debate will focus on two Orders issued under the Motor Traffic Act.

Parliament will consider the Orders on September 8 from 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. They were published in Extraordinary Gazettes Nos. 2489/22 and 2493/19.

Defence Bill and Women’s Empowerment

On September 9, lawmakers will begin the Second Reading debate on the Chief of Defence Staff (Repeal) Bill.

The debate will run from 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

The next day, Parliament will consider a Resolution under the Women’s Empowerment Act.

That debate will also run from 11.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Lawmakers will also have the usual question periods during each sitting day.

Economic and Social Issues

Friday’s sitting will bring several other issues before Parliament through Private Members’ Motions.

One proposal by Nalin Bandara Jayamaha seeks to bring industries linked to petroleum, fuel and water under the regulation of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.

Other proposals cover birth incentives, forest protection, teacher pensions, food cultivation and the Kithul industry.

Harsha de Silva will move a motion on protecting the Diyagama Forest.

Sujeewa Dissanayake will propose removing the additional six percent pension deduction from Pirivena teachers’ salaries.

Another motion will look at developing the Kithul industry, while M. L. A. M. Hizbullah will propose establishing a Faculty of Medicine at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

The four-day sitting will therefore cover a wide range of issues, from motor traffic and defence to utilities, agriculture, education and social policy.
