President’s Fund Starts Scholarships for Children of Low-Income Lottery Sellers

President’s Fund Starts Scholarships for Children of Low-Income Lottery Sellers

The President’s Fund has launched a new scholarship scheme for children of low-income lottery sales assistants, starting in the North Central Province.

The scholarships will support children from Grade 1 through GCE Advanced Level. The Fund plans to extend the scheme to all provinces.

The first 2026 scholarship event took place in Anuradhapura under the patronage of Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.

Minister Susil Ranasinghe and President’s Fund Secretary and Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage also attended the event.

Support for Lottery Sellers’ Children

The new scheme aims to help children of low-income lottery sales assistants continue their education.

The President’s Fund said it also recognises the contribution lottery sellers make through lottery sales.

The scholarships will cover several stages of a child’s education, from the first year of school to the GCE Advanced Level.

The North Central Province will serve as the starting point. However, the Fund plans to take the scheme to other provinces, allowing more eligible children to receive support.

Nationwide Expansion Planned

The initiative adds education support to the assistance provided through the President’s Fund.

Speaker Wickramaratne said every rupee received by the Fund would go towards helping people in need.

He also said the Fund, which has operated for 50 years, had become more focused on public assistance since last year.

The planned nationwide expansion will allow more children from low-income lottery-selling families to receive education support.
