Central Bank: Official Foreign Reserves Rise to US.591bn in July

Official foreign reserves increased to US$6.591 billion at the end of July, up from US$6.458 billion in June, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The latest Central Bank data shows that reserves increased by US$133 million during the month. Based on the reported figures, this is an increase of about 2.1% from June.

Reserves Stay Above US$6.5bn

Foreign reserves give a country a buffer to meet payments to the rest of the world. These include payments for imports, foreign debt and other overseas needs.

The latest increase kept the total reserve position above the US$6.5 billion level.

Reserve levels are closely watched by businesses and investors. They can affect confidence in the country’s ability to meet foreign currency payments.

Higher reserves can also help support payments for essential imports and other overseas transactions.

Gold Reserves Also Increase

Gold reserves also recorded a small increase during July.

The Central Bank reported gold reserves of US$191 million at the end of June. This increased by US$1 million to US$192 million at the end of July.

The latest figures show an improvement in the overall official reserve position during July. Gold holdings also moved slightly higher during the month.
