People can now hand over electronic waste at Dialog outlets across the country after Dialog Axiata relaunched its e-Kunu electronic waste management programme with the Central Environmental Authority (CEA).
The programme provides households and businesses with more places to safely dispose of electronic waste. Registered recyclers will collect the items and process them using approved recycling and disposal methods.
Dialog relaunched the programme on Monday at the CEA. The company and the authority also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue the initiative.
Programme accepts a wide range of electronic waste
The e-Kunu programme accepts mobile phones, laptops, chargers, cables, routers, hard disks, landline phones, CDs, DVDs, set-top boxes and batteries.
Accepted batteries include lithium-ion, AA and AAA batteries.
The programme aims to improve access to safe electronic waste disposal. It also encourages more people to recycle unwanted electronic devices.
According to the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024, the world generated about 62 million tonnes of electronic waste in 2022. Only 22.3% was formally recycled. The report expects global e-waste to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030.
CEA Chairman Tilak Hewawasam and Dialog Axiata Chief Executive Officer Supun Weerasinghe signed the agreement on behalf of their organisations.
The expanded collection network makes it easier for households and businesses to recycle electronic waste through Dialog’s outlets across the country.
