Making everyday payments could become faster and more convenient as Bank of Ceylon (BOC) has introduced a mobile-based Tap & Pay service that allows customers to pay directly from their smartphones.
The new BOC Flex Tap & Pay service was launched at Cinnamon Life, Colombo, in partnership with Mastercard, as part of efforts to expand digital payment options and reduce reliance on cash.
Payments Without a Physical Card
The new service enables customers to complete purchases by simply tapping their mobile phones on compatible Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals.
Users can also create and manage virtual payment cards through the mobile application without needing a physical card.
The platform includes security features that allow customers to temporarily suspend their virtual cards whenever necessary.
Supports Digital Economy Goals
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne said wider adoption of digital payment technologies will support the country’s digital economy agenda.
He added that the Government will continue supporting initiatives such as the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SLUDI) project and greater interoperability between payment platforms to encourage digital payments among rural entrepreneurs and small businesses.
First Mobile Payment Demonstrated
Former national cricket captain Mahela Jayawardena completed the country’s first mobile-based contactless payment using the BOC Flex Tap & Pay platform during the launch event.
The demonstration showcased how customers can make everyday transactions without carrying a physical payment card.
