Clarification: SriLankan Airlines Says No Evidence Found of Cyberattack or Data Theft

SriLankan Airlines says it has found no evidence that hackers gained access to its information technology systems after reports emerged of a possible cyberattack.

The national carrier said it launched investigations, technical checks and precautionary measures immediately after reports appeared on June 29.

According to the airline, those checks found no evidence of unauthorised access to its internal IT or operational systems.

The airline also said it found no signs of damage to information, data theft or disruption to its services.

Airline says services continued normally

SriLankan Airlines said all of its systems and services continued to operate without interruption.

This included its email services and operational systems. The airline said the reported incident did not affect its operations or its ability to provide services at any point.

That means the airline is not confirming that a cyberattack took place. Instead, it is rejecting the reports based on the findings of its checks.

The airline also denied reports that hackers had demanded a ransom. It said no party had asked for payment in Bitcoin, US dollars, or any other form of payment.

The carrier added that it had not held any discussions about a ransom demand or payment.

What does the airline’s clarification mean?

SriLankan Airlines has categorically rejected claims that hackers accessed its systems or gained control of them. The airline’s statement is based on the investigations and technical assessments it carried out after the reports emerged.

For now, the carrier says there is no evidence of unauthorised access, data theft, damage to information or disruption to its operations.

The clarification is important because reports of a cyberattack can create concerns about customer information, airline operations and service availability.

SriLankan Airlines has therefore made clear that its systems remained operational and that it found no evidence to support the reported claims.
