Sri Lanka is looking to expand economic engagement with Thailand through increased cooperation in trade, tourism, technology, transport and sustainable development, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath said.
The focus on stronger economic ties comes as businesses in both countries seek new opportunities for trade, investment and commercial partnerships. Growing trade volumes between Sri Lanka and Thailand have also highlighted the potential for further collaboration across several sectors.
The Minister made the remarks while addressing the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka–Thailand Business Council in Colombo on Friday (19) as the chief guest.
Herath commended the council for its role in connecting the private sectors of both countries over the past 25 years.
The Minister said the council has contributed to building commercial relationships and creating opportunities for economic engagement between businesses in Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Focus on Expanding Economic Cooperation
According to Herath, increasing import and export volumes between the two countries reflect the progress made through continued cooperation.
He noted that businesses can benefit from closer engagement in areas including trade, tourism, transport and logistics, technology and sustainable development.
These sectors continue to attract interest as companies look for new markets, supply chain partnerships and investment opportunities across the region.
“Reaching a 25-year relationship reflects not only longevity but also the trust and strong relationships built over the years,” he said.
Business Council Marks 25 Years
Herath said the long-standing relationship between the two countries extends beyond economic ties.
“Our friendship, strengthened by religious, cultural and historical ties, is further reinforced today through growing economic cooperation and strong people-to-people connections,” he said.
The Minister expressed confidence that the Sri Lanka–Thailand Business Council would continue to create opportunities for businesses and support closer economic engagement in the years ahead.
For exporters, importers, tourism operators and logistics providers, stronger commercial links with Thailand could create additional opportunities as both countries explore new areas of cooperation.
