Sri Lanka Tests Passenger Drone Ahead of November 11 Demonstration

Sri Lanka is moving closer to introducing passenger drone technology, with test flights underway at Colombo Port City ahead of an official demonstration on November 11.

The trials involve an electric aircraft developed by Chinese aviation technology company EHang Holdings. The aircraft can carry two passengers and is designed to take off and land vertically without a conventional runway.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that EHang is scheduled to conduct a demonstration flight centred around Port City Colombo. The event will showcase how this technology could support urban air travel and offer new experiences for local and foreign tourists.

The first aircraft has already arrived in Sri Lanka as part of the pilot project. It is reportedly capable of carrying two passengers, with a flight duration of around 30 minutes.

How Passenger Drone Technology Could Open New Travel Options?

The project is being explored for several uses beyond passenger transport. These include tourist flights, emergency medical transportation and cargo deliveries to areas that are difficult to reach.

Colombo Port City has been identified as the main operational hub for the initial phase. Plans are also being considered for tourist flights around Sigiriya, Pidurangala and nearby attractions.

Such flights could offer visitors a different way to experience some of the country’s popular destinations. However, these routes remain under consideration and are not yet operating as commercial services.

The technology could also support short-distance travel within urban areas. In addition, authorities are exploring its possible use in delivering essential supplies and supporting emergency response services.

About EHang and Its Aircraft Technology

EHang Holdings is a Chinese technology company that develops autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOLs. Its aircraft are designed to carry passengers or transport goods without an onboard pilot. The company’s EH216-S model uses electric propulsion and pre-programmed flight routes, with automated navigation, vertical take-off and landing, and systems designed to monitor aircraft performance during flights.

EHang says its EH216-S has received type, production and airworthiness certifications from China’s Civil Aviation Administration. The company has also developed aircraft for passenger transport, tourism, logistics and emergency response.

Regulatory Assessment Before Wider Introduction

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka has been involved in discussions with EHang and other government authorities about introducing the technology.

These discussions cover the regulatory framework, aircraft certification, operating conditions, airspace management and safety requirements. The authorities are also considering the infrastructure needed to support take-offs, landings and ground operations.

Sri Lanka joined EHang’s Global Fast Track Program in August 2026. The programme aims to help countries assess and introduce pilotless passenger aircraft through a phased process, subject to regulatory, technical, operational and safety assessments.

The November 11 demonstration will provide an opportunity to observe the aircraft’s capabilities. However, wider passenger services will depend on the outcome of further assessments and the required approvals.

For now, the project remains at the testing and evaluation stage. Its next steps will determine whether passenger drones can become another transport option for tourism and other services in Sri Lanka.
