Dating Apps to Banking Scams: Police Warn About Malicious Mobile Apps

Dating Apps to Banking Scams: Police Warn About Malicious Mobile Apps

Sri Lanka Police have warned the public about a new type of online scam linked to dating apps and social media. Scammers first try to build a friendship or romantic link with their victims. They may send friendly or attractive messages for days or even longer to gain trust.

After that, a scammer may ask the person to download a mobile app. Police say the app may look like a dating or service app but could contain harmful software.

How the Scam Can Reach Your Bank Account

A harmful app can give a scammer access to information on a mobile phone.

Problems can become serious when a victim uses online banking while that app remains on the phone. During such a transaction, the scammer may get the victim’s banking username and password.

With those details, criminals may enter the victim’s account and take money without permission. People may meet these scammers on dating apps, Facebook, WhatsApp or Telegram. Some criminals may claim to offer online sexual services or a chance to form a personal relationship.

Police say scam methods on social media and messaging apps are changing fast.

Police Give Simple Safety Advice

People should not download apps from unknown sources. Extra care is needed when a stranger sends an app or asks someone to install one. Never give a stranger your bank details, password or one-time password (OTP). Personal details should stay private too.

Police have also warned people not to send personal photos or videos to strangers online.

Online friendships can feel real, but trust should not lead to risky actions. Before installing an app or sharing private information, users should first check who they are dealing with.

A simple rule can help: never install an unknown app because a stranger online asks you to.
