2027 Government Spending Estimated at Rs. 4.99 Trillion

The Government has estimated its total spending for 2027 at nearly Rs. 4.99 trillion.

The 2027 Appropriation Bill has now appeared in the Gazette. This starts the formal process for Parliament to review and approve the Government’s spending plan for next year.

The estimated expenditure is Rs. 4,992,773,388,000.

Cabinet recently approved the Bill before the Government published it in the Gazette on September 21.

When Will the 2027 Budget Be Presented?

  • The Government plans to present the first reading of the 2027 Appropriation Bill on October 7, 2026.
  • The second reading, which includes the Budget Speech, will take place on November 12, 2026.
  • After that, Parliament will debate the second reading from November 13 to 20.
  • The Committee Stage debate will then run from November 21 to December 14.

During these debates, Parliament will examine the Government’s planned spending for the year ahead.

What Is an Appropriation Bill?

An Appropriation Bill is a Bill that asks Parliament to approve the Government’s planned spending for a financial year.

It sets out how much money the Government plans to spend across different areas of government.

In simple terms, it is the Government’s formal spending plan that Parliament must approve.

Therefore, the 2027 Appropriation Bill starts the parliamentary process for the country’s 2027 Budget.

It will also give Parliament an opportunity to examine how the Government plans to use public money during the year.

The Bill therefore provides the basis for the spending decisions that will shape government programmes and services in 2027.
