The government has moved closer to extending the retirement age of judges after the Attorney General approved the draft bill. The proposal aims to keep experienced judges on the bench and help reduce the country’s growing court backlog.
The Attorney General’s Department has sent its legal observations to the Ministry of Justice. The ministry will now finalise the bill and publish it in the Gazette.
The Ministry of Justice presented the proposal to the Cabinet earlier. The Cabinet approved a plan to extend the retirement age of judges by two years.
The government said the change would help courts hear and conclude cases more quickly. More than 1.1 million cases are still pending across the country’s courts.
The bill will move to the next stage of the legislative process after the ministry publishes it in the Gazette.
