Improving public transport will be a key priority in the 2027 Budget, with the Government aiming to provide a more accessible and affordable transport system while reducing the financial burden on commuters.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake outlined the priority during a pre-Budget review at the Presidential Secretariat, where officials assessed the progress of projects funded under the 2026 Budget and discussed proposals for next year.
Public Transport Takes Priority
The President said developing a quality public transport system should receive the same level of attention as Sri Lanka’s free healthcare system, highlighting its importance to the public.
He also called for a new strategy to modernise public transport and improve services across the country.
Focus on New Buses and Ongoing Projects
During the discussion, the President reviewed plans to gradually replace ageing buses with modern fleets, including the introduction of metro buses for short-distance urban routes.
Officials also reviewed the progress of major highways, apartment construction, urban waste management and CITY BRANDING projects, together with proposals requiring funding under the 2027 Budget.
Projects to Be Prioritised
The President instructed officials to identify projects that could be completed within the next year and allocate Budget provisions accordingly.
He also directed that projects funded through foreign loans should only proceed after a clear assessment of their expected outcomes.
The Government is expected to finalise transport, highways and urban development proposals as part of preparations for the presentation of the 2027 Budget later this year.
