Improved air connectivity can play a major role in driving tourism, business travel, and visitor spending. The launch of a new direct air service between Ahmedabad and Colombo is expected to strengthen access to one of India’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets while reducing travel time for visitors.
Starting 19 June 2026, FitsAir launched direct flights between Ahmedabad and Colombo, creating a direct connection between Gujarat and Colombo in just 3 hours and 40 minutes.
The new route is being promoted through a partnership involving FitsAir, City of Dreams Sri Lanka, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, and Walkers Tours, with a focus on attracting leisure travellers, families, destination wedding groups, and luxury tourists.
Faster Access to Colombo
The new service operates between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad and Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.
Previously, many travellers relied on connecting flights that increased overall journey times.
With the introduction of direct flights, visitors can now reach Colombo in approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes.
FitsAir will operate the route three times a week.
Industry stakeholders believe the shorter travel time could make Colombo a more attractive option for short international holidays and weekend breaks.
Tourism Industry Eyes Growth from Gujarat
Gujarat represents an important outbound travel market, particularly for family travel, religious tourism, leisure holidays, and destination events.
Tourism industry stakeholders expect the new route to create additional opportunities for hotels, travel operators, restaurants, transport providers, and tourism-related businesses.
Commenting on the launch, Senior Vice President – Colombo Hotels, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and General Manager, City of Dreams Sri Lanka, Kamal Munasinghe said:
“Indian travellers are increasingly looking for international destinations that combine accessibility with premium experiences. This new route allows travelers from Gujarat to experience Colombo and City of Dreams Sri Lanka more conveniently than ever before.”
Strengthening Travel and Cultural Links
FitsAir said the service is designed to improve travel convenience while supporting stronger links between India and Colombo.
Director of FitsAir, Ammar Kassim, said:
“We are delighted to introduce direct connectivity between Ahmedabad and Colombo. The route is designed to offer travelers a seamless and comfortable journey while strengthening tourism and cultural exchange between India and Sri Lanka.”
Industry observers note that India remains one of the most important tourism source markets, making improved air connectivity a key factor in attracting more visitors.
City of Dreams and Luxury Tourism in Focus
The route launch is also expected to support luxury tourism offerings centred around City of Dreams Sri Lanka and the wider Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts portfolio.
Visitors arriving through the new service can access accommodation, entertainment, dining, wellness experiences, shopping, and destination wedding facilities in Colombo.
Tour operators are also expected to promote multi-destination itineraries covering locations such as Kandy and the southern coastal regions.
Effective 19 June 2026, FitsAir operate flights three times a week.
