Leadership changes at major technology platforms often signal the next phase of growth and business strategy. That is particularly true for WhatsApp, which has evolved from a messaging application into a platform increasingly focused on business services, digital payments, advertising, and artificial intelligence.
Meta has announced that Kunal Shah, founder of the Indian fintech company Cred, will take over as the new head of WhatsApp following the departure of long-time platform chief Will Cathcart.
The leadership transition comes at a time when WhatsApp serves more than three billion users globally and plays an increasingly important role in Meta’s business ecosystem.
Will Cathcart Steps Down After Seven Years
Will Cathcart confirmed on Monday that he is leaving his role after nearly seven years leading WhatsApp.
During his tenure, WhatsApp expanded its private messaging services globally and became one of the world’s largest communication platforms.
In a statement posted on social media, Cathcart said the platform was in “the strongest position it’s ever been” and that it “felt like the right moment to step back.”
He will continue to hold a leadership role within Meta.
Kunal Shah Takes Over
Meta has selected Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp’s next chapter.
Shah is best known as the founder of Cred, a Bengaluru-based fintech company that offers rewards and financial services to creditworthy consumers.
Before launching Cred in 2018, Shah worked as an investor and adviser to several start-ups across India and Southeast Asia.
His appointment highlights Meta’s growing focus on financial technology, digital commerce, and emerging markets.
Zuckerberg Backs New Appointment
Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah’s track record as a technology entrepreneur.
He said:
“Kunal has created one of India’s most important technology companies.”
Zuckerberg added:
“He brings the kind of builder mentality and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world’s biggest messaging app.”
He also noted:
“I look forward to working with Kunal to continue to make WhatsApp the best service for billions of people and millions of businesses.”
Why India Matters to WhatsApp
The leadership change comes as Meta seeks to strengthen WhatsApp’s position in India, its largest market.
According to World Population Review, WhatsApp has approximately 853 million users in India alone.
For Meta, the country represents a major growth opportunity for digital payments, business messaging, e-commerce, and AI-powered services.
Industry observers expect Shah’s experience in financial technology to help accelerate some of these initiatives.
Cred and Meta Connection
Shah confirmed that he will continue as a shareholder in Cred while assuming his new responsibilities at WhatsApp.
He also disclosed that Cred has raised approximately US$900 million in investment, including funding from Meta.
According to Bloomberg, Meta holds a 20% stake in the company.
Shah stated that while Meta remains a minority investor, it will have “no access to member data.”
