Attention is now shifting from diplomacy to implementation after Iran and the United States finalized a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending months of tensions and creating a framework for broader negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that the first round of negotiations on a final agreement between Iran and the United States will begin after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) is formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
Araghchi made the remarks following a meeting with members of the Iranian parliament’s economic committee in Tehran, according to the state-run IRIB news agency.
Talks on Final Agreement to Begin
According to Araghchi, discussions on a comprehensive agreement are expected to take place within a 60-day period.
He said the timeframe could be extended if necessary.
A meeting between the heads of the two negotiating delegations is also expected to be held on Friday.
Araghchi stated that Iran finalized the MoU with the United States on Sunday night.
He added that implementation of certain provisions began on Monday, while additional measures will take effect following the formal signing ceremony.
Nuclear Program and Sanctions Among Key Topics
The Iranian Foreign Minister said negotiations during the 60-day period will focus on Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions.
He noted that any future agreement could create economic opportunities for Iran.
However, he cautioned against relying entirely on negotiations to drive economic performance.
“The agreement could lead to economic breakthroughs for Iran,” he said, adding that “we should not tie our economy to such economic agreements through negotiations with the United States.”
Iran Reaffirms Negotiating Position
Also on Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the country’s negotiating team would continue to operate within the policies and framework established by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
According to the official IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian stressed that the negotiating position would remain unchanged throughout the process.
Agreement to Be Signed in Switzerland
The United States, Pakistan, and Iran announced early Monday that the memorandum of understanding had been finalized following weeks of negotiations.
The agreement is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
The signing is expected to mark the beginning of a new phase of diplomatic engagement, with negotiators seeking to reach a broader agreement over the coming weeks.
