New Engineering Education Policy to Focus on Quality and National Needs

A new national policy for engineering education is being developed with a focus on improving education quality and matching training with national development needs.

A 26-member expert committee will lead the work, bringing together academics, professionals, government representatives and students from across the engineering and higher education sectors.

This Policy will Address National Development Needs

Professor K. T. M. Udayanga Hemapala, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, will head the committee.

Its main task is to develop a comprehensive national policy that can improve the quality of engineering education. The policy will also aim to align engineering education with the country’s development requirements. However, authorities have not yet announced specific changes or new standards that the policy may introduce.

Experts From Universities and Engineering Sector

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Nalaka Kaluwewa appointed the committee on the instructions of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

The panel includes academics, experts and professionals from universities, higher education institutions, state agencies and the engineering sector.

Student representatives are also part of the committee. This brings together views from education institutions, government bodies, industry professionals and students as work on the national policy begins.
