Expressway Passengers Must Wear Seat Belts Now – Police Manoj Ranagala

Passengers travelling on Sri Lanka’s expressways must wear seat belts from today, September 19.

The Ministry of Transport and Highways has ended the one-year grace period given to motorists to follow the rule.

From today, police will take legal action against drivers and passengers who travel without seat belts.

The rule applies to both front and rear seat passengers.

No Seat Belt, No Expressway Entry

Passengers must make sure they wear their seat belts before the vehicle enters the expressway.

Drivers should also check that all passengers have their seat belts fastened.

Vehicles without seat belts will not be allowed to enter the expressway.

The police have warned that rear-seat passengers must also follow the rule.

Police Begin Enforcement

Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala, Director of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division, said the grace period ends on September 18.

Therefore, police will begin enforcement from September 19.

The authorities said the rule aims to reduce the risk of serious injuries during road accidents.

SSP Ranagala also said enforcement is not only about issuing fines. The main aim is to protect lives.

For expressway users, the change is simple: every passenger must wear a seat belt before travelling on the expressway.

Passengers should also check whether the vehicle has working seat belts before starting their journey.
