The Supreme Court will hear petitions challenging the constitutionality of the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution on September 1.
A five-member bench will consider the petitions. Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena will head the bench.
The other members are Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.
Several parties have filed petitions against the proposed amendment.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka is among those challenging the Bill, along with other petitioners.
Debate Over Proposed Amendment
The 22nd Amendment has sparked both legal and political debate.
One area of concern involves the proposed changes relating to the judiciary.
The petitions ask the Supreme Court to consider whether the proposed changes comply with the Constitution.
The court is scheduled to take up the petitions on Tuesday, September 1.
The Government has said it will abide by the Supreme Court’s determination on the constitutionality of the Bill.
The court’s decision will therefore determine the next step for the proposed 22nd Amendment.
