Commercial Bank of Ceylon and Axonect have demonstrated how Open Digital Architecture (ODA) can support modern banking.
The two companies presented the implementation at TM Forum’s DTW Ignite 2026 in Copenhagen.
ODA began as a technology model for the telecommunications industry. Commercial Bank and Axonect have now adapted it for financial services.
The implementation uses Axonect’s Fabric and API Management platforms.
It helps Commercial Bank connect different digital services while keeping control over data, security and regulatory requirements.
How ODA is being used in banking
The new architecture uses microservices and APIs to connect different parts of the bank’s digital environment.
As a result, Commercial Bank can add and connect digital services while maintaining its existing security and compliance controls.
Sumudu Gunawardhana, Chief Information Officer of Commercial Bank, presented the implementation at DTW Ignite with Anthony Rodrigo, CEO of Axonect.
Gunawardhana said the platform has strengthened the bank’s core technology environment.
He said the system provides the flexibility and scalability of cloud technology. At the same time, the bank retains control over data governance, security and regulatory compliance.
The bank said the implementation has improved operational efficiency and reduced its cost footprint.
It has also supported digital services such as Google Pay and real-time PayPal cross-border remittance clearing.
Commercial Bank also said its API-driven digital ecosystem has achieved near-perfect system availability.
Commercial Bank moves towards AI-driven banking
The technology platform now forms part of the bank’s next stage of digital development.
Commercial Bank is working towards what it calls “agentic banking”.
This model will use artificial intelligence and greater automation across banking activities.
The bank expects this approach to support wider use of AI and participation in open finance ecosystems.
It also aims to expand its digital capabilities into new markets and sectors.
Meanwhile, Anthony Rodrigo, CEO of Axonect, said the project shows that ODA can work beyond telecommunications.
He pointed to the growing use of AI, cloud computing, APIs and data governance across modern businesses.
Willie Stegmann, Executive Vice President – Composable IT & Ecosystems at TM Forum, said the collaboration shows how an open framework can support system integration and AI adoption.
For Commercial Bank, the move brings its technology architecture into a new phase. The bank can now build on the platform as it expands its use of AI and develops further digital banking services.
