Agri Ministry Plans Insurance Cover for Mushroom Farmers

The Government plans to introduce a new insurance scheme for mushroom farmers to protect them against crop losses caused by diseases and insect infestations.

What Insurance Cover for Farmers?

  • Farmers can insure a mushroom house with 250 grow bags for a three-month period by paying a premium of about 2,025.
  • If disease or insect attacks damage an established crop, the scheme will pay up to Rs. 22,500 in compensation.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme will cover mushroom farmers who follow the cultivation guidelines issued by the Department of Agriculture.

The Government expects the insurance programme to give growers greater confidence to expand production while reducing the financial impact of crop losses.

The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board plans to introduce the scheme as part of its efforts to support mushroom farming and strengthen Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector.

Editor’s Insight

Crop insurance helps farmers recover more quickly after unexpected losses. The proposed scheme could encourage more investment in mushroom farming by giving growers extra financial security against disease and pest damage.
