Government Extends Housing Rent Allowance by Three Months

Eligible families displaced by Cyclone Ditwah can now receive the monthly rental allowance for up to nine months while rebuilding their homes.

Families who lost their homes due to landslides and floods caused by Cyclone Ditwah will receive government housing rent support for an additional three months under a new Cabinet-approved decision.

The extension increases the maximum duration of the monthly temporary housing rental allowance from six months to nine months for eligible homeowners who do not have alternative accommodation while constructing a new house.

Monthly Support Continues

Under the Program for Empowering those Affected by the Disaster, eligible beneficiaries will continue to receive Rs. 25,000 per month to help cover temporary housing costs.

The revised arrangement was announced through Budget Circular No. 08/2025 (iv), signed by Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma and issued to relevant government institutions.

Existing Conditions Remain

The Treasury said all other conditions outlined in the original Budget Circular issued on 5 December 2025 will continue without changes.

Eligible families rebuilding their homes can continue receiving the monthly rental allowance for up to nine months, subject to the existing program guidelines.
