Department of Railways Restores Full Colombo–Puttalam Train Services After Cyclone Disruption

Train services along the Colombo–Puttalam railway line resumed fully early this morning (16), following weeks of disruption caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The Railway Department confirmed that the section between Chilaw and Puttalam reopened today. As a result, trains can now operate across the entire stretch from Colombo Fort to Puttalam.

Services on the Puttalam line were temporarily suspended after the cyclone caused extensive infrastructure damage. Authorities restored operations in phases. Initially, trains ran up to Negombo, Kochchikade, Nattandiya and Kudawa. Later, services extended to Chilaw Railway Station on December 29.

However, severe damage affected the section beyond Chilaw. Floodwaters washed away parts of the track near the Baththuluoya bridge. A landslide blocked the line near the Thillayadi sub-station. In addition, sections of railway track were swept into the Deduru Oya near the Manuwangama sub-station.

Repair teams worked to restore damaged infrastructure and ensure safety standards before reopening the final stretch.

The 4:00 a.m. train from Colombo Fort today became the first passenger service to complete the full journey to Puttalam since the cyclone. This marks the full restoration of operations along the line.

Officials say the reopening will improve connectivity for commuters and businesses in the affected regions.
