The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced that an online appointment system for passport applications will soon be introduced, aiming to streamline the application process and reduce wait times for Sri Lankan nationals. This initiative comes in response to persistent queues outside the Department due to a shortage of blank passports.
Key Highlights:
- Online Appointment System: The new system, expected to be launched shortly, will enable applicants to secure a specific time for in-person visits, significantly reducing on-site congestion and delays.
- Increased Passport Stock: Currently, 50,000 blank passports are available, with an additional stock of 100,000 scheduled for November and another 150,000 by December. These supplies are expected to ease the backlog and address ongoing shortages.
- Reducing Public Congestion: The anticipated system is a response to months of overcrowding and long queues outside the Department, where applicants have faced delays due to limited passport availability.
The Government Information Department indicated that the system’s launch will offer applicants a more efficient way to obtain passports, alleviating pressures on the Department and improving service access for citizens.
