The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has initiated a new program to recover unpaid taxes by directly visiting premises of defaulters, following the September 30 deadline for settling outstanding tax payments under the self-assessment system.
Commissioner General Sepalika Chandrasekera confirmed that, despite a large number of taxpayers meeting the deadline, the department has begun visiting non-compliant individuals as of October 4. The department has also been instructed to expedite legal measures for tax recovery.
The IRD aims to collect Rs. 2,024 billion in revenue this year, having already achieved Rs. 1,417 billion (70% of the target) by the end of September—marking the highest revenue goal in the department’s history.
