The High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, together with Dr. P. G. Mahipala, Secretary of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Surgical Unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. The facility, constructed with an Indian grant of LKR 300 million, is set to address healthcare access challenges, aiming to reduce the hospital’s surgical waiting list by 50% and serve nearly 5,000 new patients annually.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Healthcare Capacity: The new Surgical Unit will significantly reduce surgery wait times, enabling thousands more to access timely medical care and alleviating patient congestion in the Eastern Province.
  • India’s Health Initiatives in Sri Lanka: As part of the Neighbourhood First policy, India has been instrumental in strengthening Sri Lanka’s healthcare system. Previous initiatives include the establishment of the 1990 Suwaseriya Emergency Ambulance Service with 300 ambulances across Sri Lanka, valued at over USD 22.5 million. Other major projects include the 150-bed hospital in Dickoya and the supply of essential medical equipment to Vavuniya Hospital.
