India-Sri Lanka Partnership Delivers New Model Village in Monaragala

In a significant step towards improving housing for low-income families in Sri Lanka, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E Santosh Jha, and Secretary of the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, Housing and Construction, Mr. Atapattu, inaugurated the Thiththavelkiwla Model Village in Monaragala on 4th November 2024. This project, a collaboration between India and Sri Lanka, supports 24 families in Monaragala with newly developed housing facilities.

  • Collaborative Project: The Model Village Housing Project, supported by the Government of India, is being implemented across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development, Housing, and Construction.
  • Project Scale: With the aim of constructing 600 homes for low-income families, the project envisions one model village per district, each with 24 houses designed for beneficiaries selected by District Housing Committees.
  • Nationwide Impact: To date, model villages have been inaugurated in 11 districts, including Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Jaffna, and Kandy, with over 96% of the project already completed. The remaining villages are expected to be handed over shortly.
