In the latest Henley Passport Index rankings released in October 2024, Sri Lanka’s passport has been ranked 94th globally. This ranking allows Sri Lankan citizens visa-free access to 44 countries, highlighting the nation’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, though it still trails behind leading Asian and Western passports in terms of global access.

Global Highlights of the Henley Passport Index 2024:

  • Singapore topped the list once again, offering visa-free access to 195 countries, reinforcing its position as the world’s most powerful passport.
  • France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain shared the second place with 192 visa-free countries accessible to their citizens.
  • Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden occupied the third spot, with visa-free access to 191 countries.
  • The United Kingdom, Belgium, Norway, New Zealand, and Switzerland follow closely, providing access to 190 countries.
  • Australia and Portugal hold the fifth rank, granting entry to 189 countries.

Notable Positions:

  • The United States ranks 8th, offering visa-free access to 186 countries, despite being the world’s largest economy.
  • India, ranked 83rd, provides its citizens with visa-free travel to 58 countries.

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of visa-free destinations available, shaped by each country’s international agreements and diplomatic ties. Traditionally, Asian countries have led the rankings, with Singapore, Japan, and South Korea consistently dominating the top positions, thanks to their robust diplomatic networks. Conversely, some of the least powerful passports are those of Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka’s position reflects moderate global access, with room for growth in diplomatic influence and international mobility for its citizens.
