Fertilizer Subsidy Distribution Begins for Sri Lanka’s 2024 Maha Season

The Department of Agrarian Development has commenced the distribution of the Rs. 25,000 fertilizer subsidy for the 2024 Maha cultivation season, confirmed Commissioner General U.P. Rohana Rajapakshe. The initiative aims to support farmers in multiple phases, with a total Rs. 441.8 million already disbursed.

Key Highlights of the Subsidy Program:

  • Phase 1: Launched with an initial Rs. 15,000 provided per farmer, benefiting 670 farmers across Ampara and Kilinochchi districts. This phase allocated Rs. 9.5 million covering 630 hectares.
  • Phase 2: Distributed Rs. 46.5 million to 4,475 farmers across 12 districts.
  • Phase 3: Allocated Rs. 57.5 million benefiting 4,219 farmers in another 12 districts.
  • Phase 4: Released Rs. 47.7 million for 4,804 farmers across 12 districts.
  • Upcoming Distribution: Today, Rs. 279.4 million will be disbursed to 22,419 farmers across 19 districts from the Treasury.

The government will also provide an additional Rs. 10,000 in the second phase, expected to be delivered within two weeks of the start of cultivation activities. This targeted subsidy aims to sustain agricultural productivity and ensure adequate fertilizer support for farmers during the critical cultivation season.
