Sri Lanka Launches Special Measles Vaccination Drive Amid Rising Concerns

Sri Lanka Launches Special Measles Vaccination Drive Amid Rising Concerns - BusinessNews.LK

The Ministry of Health has announced a targeted measles vaccination campaign scheduled from November 4 to 9 to address the increased risk of measles resurgence. This initiative, led by the Epidemiology Unit, aims to protect individuals across 12 districts who have either not received the measles vaccine or have only had a single dose.

Key Details:

  • Target Group: The program focuses on individuals at risk due to incomplete vaccination history, specifically those who either missed the vaccine or only received one dose.
  • Vaccination Coverage: According to Dr. Hasitha Tissera, Senior Epidemiologist, this drive will cover 12 selected districts to curb the potential spread of measles following a reported rise in cases since 2023.

  • Timing of Routine Vaccination: Typically, the measles vaccine is administered to infants at 9 months, given the high susceptibility of children to the disease before reaching this age.

Increased Vigilance Against Measles

Though Sri Lanka successfully eradicated measles, recent trends indicate a risk of recurrence. Health officials emphasize that those without full vaccination remain vulnerable, underscoring the importance of this program in preventing a wider outbreak and reinforcing community immunity.
