Nuwara Eliya Post Office Restoration Project Moves Ahead with Rs. 78.34 Million Building Investment

Nuwara Eliya Post Office Restoration Project Moves Ahead with Rs. 78.34 Million Building Investment

Nuwara Eliya’s historic post office is undergoing conservation alongside the construction of a new postal administration building estimated to cost Rs. 78.34 million.

A foundation stone has been laid for the new two-storey building within the historic post office premises. It will accommodate the Nuwara Eliya Regional Superintendent of Post Office’s Office and the postal operations division.

Meanwhile, conservation work is continuing on the historic red-brick post office, which dates back to the British colonial period. Its English Tudor architectural style makes it one of the town’s recognised historic buildings.

Historic Post Office Planned as Tourist Promotion Centre

Once conservation work is completed, the historic post office is expected to become a tourist promotion centre.

The facility will provide information and guidance to local and foreign visitors about tourist attractions. This will give the historic building a tourism-related role while preserving its architectural features.

The Sri Lanka Navy is contributing labour to the conservation work under the supervision of the Department of Buildings and the Department of Archaeology.

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said

“Preserving the historic Nuwara Eliya Post Office is not merely about restoring an old building, but a task of national significance that protects national heritage and adds new value to the country’s tourism industry,” he said.

Rs. 600 Million Allocated for Postal Building Repairs

The Nuwara Eliya development is part of a wider programme to repair and conserve postal buildings across the country.

The Government has allocated Rs. 600 million for postal office repairs and conservation work in 2026. The programme covers the Nuwara Eliya Post Office and another 88 post offices islandwide.

The new administration building will accommodate postal management and operations separately, while the historic property is planned for tourism promotion.
