Sri Lanka’s first passenger transport drone has arrived, with its maiden flight planned at Colombo Port City by the end of October. The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) announced the arrival and upcoming flight.
The aircraft can carry two passengers and has a flight time of about 30 minutes.
Passenger Drone Set for First Flight
Colombo Port City will serve as the first operational zone for the project.
However, passenger services cannot begin until the required regulatory and safety approvals are in place.
Sri Lanka has also become the first country to adopt the Global Fast Track Programme launched by Chinese technology company EHang. The programme aims to speed up the use of pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in international markets.
Tourism and Airport Transfers Under Consideration
Several possible uses are already being considered. For tourism, operators are looking at scenic flights over Sigiriya and Pidurangala.
Another possible service could carry passengers between Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake and hotels in Colombo.
The project could also explore other uses in tourism and maritime logistics.
For now, these routes remain under consideration. Any passenger service will depend on the required approvals and safety checks.
