Sri Lanka is preparing to test a six-passenger drone aircraft under a pilot project as the country explores new technologies to modernize its air transport sector.
According to NewsFirst, Civil Aviation Authority Director General Daminda Rambukwella said the proposed trial will evaluate the use of passenger-carrying drone aircraft in Sri Lanka as part of efforts to introduce emerging aviation technologies.
Pilot Project Planned
The proposed drone aircraft will be capable of carrying up to six passengers, making it suitable for testing future urban and regional air mobility solutions.
The Civil Aviation Authority said the initiative will begin as a pilot project, with further developments expected to depend on the outcome of the trial.
Growing Global Trend
Officials noted that similar passenger drone projects are already operating in countries such as China, Singapore and Thailand, where authorities are exploring new ways to improve urban transportation.
The pilot project will help the Civil Aviation Authority assess the feasibility, safety and operational requirements of introducing passenger drone services in Sri Lanka before any wider implementation is considered.
Editor’s Insight
Passenger drone technology is gaining global attention as countries explore faster and more efficient transport options. While Sri Lanka’s project is still at the testing stage, it signals growing interest in adopting next-generation aviation technologies.
