Commercial Bank Wins Euromoney’s Best Bank and Best ESG Bank Awards

Commercial Bank of Ceylon has won two Sri Lankan titles at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, receiving both Best Bank in Sri Lanka and Best ESG Bank in Sri Lanka.

The awards recognise the bank’s financial performance and its work in environmental, social and governance (ESG) areas.

Euromoney highlighted Commercial Bank’s performance during 2025, including profit before tax of more than Rs.89.38 billion and total assets of Rs.3.26 trillion.

The bank also reported a return on equity of 19.5% and strong capital and funding positions.

Strong Growth in Banking Business

Commercial Bank’s loans exceeded Rs.2.028 trillion during the year, while total assets grew by 16.8%.

The bank also became the first local bank to exceed US$1 billion in market capitalisation.

Digital banking formed another part of the bank’s growth. Commercial Bank introduced Google Pay and an AI-based credit assessment system for small and medium-sized businesses.

The bank also expanded its international presence with a representative office at the Dubai International Financial Centre.

ESG Award Highlights Green Finance

The Best ESG Bank award recognises Commercial Bank’s work in sustainable finance and wider ESG activities.

One of the key areas is green finance. The bank issued a Rs.15 billion Green Bond to support projects in renewable energy, green buildings and sustainable transport.

Commercial Bank also reported a strong focus on small and medium-sized businesses.

The bank says it held a 20% share of the SME lending market and provided more than Rs.335 billion in financing to the sector during 2025.

In addition, its agency banking and Bank on Wheels services have helped extend banking services to areas with limited access to traditional branches.

The bank has also supported agriculture and microfinance through programmes such as the Dirishakthi Value Chain initiative.

Focus on Financial Inclusion

Commercial Bank has also linked its ESG work to financial inclusion and support for women.

Its Anagi brand provides banking products aimed at women. The bank has also supported women through financial literacy, skills development and health programmes.

Meanwhile, its community programmes cover areas such as education, healthcare, environmental protection and disaster relief.

The bank’s Trees for Tomorrow project planted more than 12,500 trees during 2025.

Two Awards Reflect Different Areas

The two Euromoney awards recognise different parts of Commercial Bank’s business.

The Best Bank award focuses on the bank’s overall financial and business performance. The Best ESG Bank award recognises its work in sustainable finance, financial inclusion and wider social and environmental programmes.

Commercial Bank said the recognition reflects its approach to combining financial performance with ESG priorities.

The bank operates more than 270 branches and has an international presence across Bangladesh and the Maldives. It also operates a representative office in Dubai and has subsidiaries covering finance and insurance-related services.
