The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) says all delayed vehicle number plates will be issued within the next six months.
DMT Commissioner General Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Thushara Fernando said arrangements will then be made to issue number plates within one week of registering a vehicle.
He made the remarks at a media briefing held in Colombo on Wednesday (9 September).
The move is aimed at clearing the existing backlog of number plates that has caused delays for vehicle owners.
Once the pending plates are issued, the DMT plans to maintain the one-week delivery period for newly registered vehicles.
