Farmers and school meal suppliers in Nuwara Eliya have received nearly Rs. 22 million worth of farming equipment to help produce and supply more food to schools.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) provided the equipment with the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment.
The equipment includes water tanks, garden hoses, sprayers, crates and fencing materials.
For farmers, these are basic tools that can make it easier to grow, handle and supply food for the school meal programme.
The support comes through the Home-Grown School Feeding programme, which connects schools with local farmers and food suppliers.
From Farmers to School Meals
The idea is simple.
Local producers supply food to schools, while the programme gives them support to take part in that supply chain.
The equipment can help farmers manage their crops and improve the way they prepare food for delivery.
The programme also supports rural livelihoods, particularly for women involved in local food production.
WFP said it has invested more than Rs. 92 million in the programme across Nuwara Eliya.
The programme has received funding from Michael Kors through WFP.
The latest Rs. 22 million in equipment therefore adds another layer of support for farmers and school meal suppliers, while helping connect local food production with the school meal system.
