Indigenous Land Rights Set for Faster Action After PM Meets Uru Warige Wannila Aththo

For generations, the indigenous Vedda community has lived with a connection to land that goes beyond ownership. It is tied to culture, identity, and survival.

That issue came into focus again during a meeting held yesterday (12) between Mr. Uru Warige Wannila Aththo and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Parliament.

According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, discussions centred on several long-standing concerns affecting the indigenous community.

Focus on Traditional Lands

During the meeting, Uru Warige Wannila Aththo highlighted the difficulties faced by indigenous families in accessing and using their traditional ancestral lands.

In response, the Prime Minister said the indigenous community has the right to access and use its traditional lands without obstruction.

She also stated that the necessary legal measures to protect those rights would be expedited.

The issue has remained a concern for indigenous communities for many years, particularly in areas where traditional land use overlaps with development, conservation, or administrative boundaries.

Relief assistance raised

The Vedda leader also raised concerns about families in Hennanigala who were affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

According to the statement, the Prime Minister immediately instructed relevant officials to ensure that affected families receive the required relief assistance without delay.

The discussion highlighted concerns that some residents had not received adequate support following the disaster.

Concerns over dambana school

Education was another key topic.

The meeting also focused on the needs and shortcomings of Dambana School. The Prime Minister stated that the matter would be examined and that necessary measures would be taken.

The discussions brought together issues of land rights, disaster relief, and education, all of which continue to play an important role in the daily lives of indigenous communities.
