President Anura Kumara Dissanayake outlines plan to modernize public bus transport

The government is setting its sights on transforming the country’s bus services.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the administration aims to build a public transport system that is comfortable, safe, efficient, and reliable for passengers across the country.

To support this goal, the government is now working on a national policy framework designed to strengthen and modernise the transport sector.

The President noted that improving public transport is a key priority as millions of commuters depend on bus services for their daily travel.

One of the main steps under consideration is the introduction of new buses that meet modern operational standards.

At the same time, the government plans to gradually remove older buses from the system, many of which no longer meet the required safety and quality standards.

However, the President acknowledged that such changes cannot happen overnight.

Instead, he said the government intends to implement the plan in stages over several years, allowing authorities to build a stronger and higher-quality bus fleet for the public.

About the Event:

The remarks came during a ceremony held at Temple Trees on 10 March, where the President attended the official appointment programme for new employees of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

At the event, 199 newly recruited drivers and 342 conductors representing all districts of the island received their appointment letters.

Marking the occasion, the President symbolically handed over appointment letters to several of the new recruits.

Reflecting on the past, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recalled the strong emotional connection once shared between the public and the SLTB.

Over time, he noted, the institution faced setbacks due to political appointments and irregular practices, which weakened the service.

However, the President expressed confidence that the new recruits would play a role in rebuilding the institution and restoring public trust.

He also congratulated the newly appointed drivers and conductors as they begin their service within the national public transport system.
