New Strategy to Position Mattala Airport as Tourism and Aviation Hub

New Strategy to Position Mattala Airport as Tourism and Aviation Hub

Authorities are working on a joint plan to reposition Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport as a stronger tourism and aviation hub.

Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Buddhika Hewawasam said the main challenge remains the lack of scheduled airline operations. However, charter flights continue during peak travel seasons under existing concessions.

He said the tourism authority is coordinating with Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd, industry operators, and aviation regulators to market Mattala more aggressively.

Officials see Mattala as a strategic alternative to Bandaranaike International Airport when flight diversions occur. In the past, many airlines diverted to Trivandrum due to limited awareness of Mattala’s operational readiness.

Hewawasam said recent work by the Civil Aviation Authority has improved safety standards and addressed earlier concerns. As a result, the airport is gaining recognition as a certified alternative destination.

Authorities now plan to brand Mattala as a dedicated tourism airport. They will promote its proximity to southern and eastern travel zones and hold engagement sessions with airlines to encourage new routes.

He added that increasing flight operations is critical for commercial viability. A possible role for SriLankan Airlines remains under review, subject to technical and financial assessments. Officials say the strategy aims to unlock Mattala’s potential and support regional tourism growth.
