The Special Investigations Unit of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) recovered more than Rs. 90 million in losses from illegal electricity use during 2025.

According to a CEB statement, the unit recovered Rs. 90,242,561.21 as compensation for financial losses. In addition, courts imposed fines amounting to Rs. 2,527,500 on offenders.

Investigations uncovered 1,259 cases of electricity theft through meter tampering. Authorities also identified 72 cases of illegal power connections made using hooks. These activities caused major financial losses to the CEB.

As a result, officers arrested suspects involved in fraudulent electricity use and started legal action against them.

Manager of Investigations at the Special Investigations Unit, Indika Fernando, said those arrested came from all levels of society. This included both high-profile individuals and ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, the CEB urged the public to help stop electricity fraud by reporting suspicious activities.

The public can provide information through the following contact numbers:

• General Line: 011-2422259
• Hotline: 1987

The CEB said public cooperation is vital to protect national resources and reduce illegal electricity consumption.
