The official ceremony took place on January 13 at the Colombo Port premises, according to the Ministry of Education.
During the event, Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, symbolically handed over the consignment to Harini Amarasuriya, who also serves as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.
The Ministry of Education said approximately 4,418,404 students across the country will be eligible to receive school uniform fabric under the programme for 2026.
Authorities have also made arrangements to distribute the fabric consignments to zonal education offices island-wide. Distribution is scheduled to begin on January 19, 2026, ensuring timely availability ahead of the new school year.
Officials noted that the programme supports equitable access to education by reducing household costs, particularly for low- and middle-income families.
