Oman and Sri Lanka have discussed increasing direct air services between the two countries, while also exploring the future development of Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport.
The discussions took place in Kuala Lumpur during the 61st Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation, Asia and Pacific Region.
Captain Daminda Rambukwella, Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer of the Civil Aviation Authority, met Eng. Naif bin Ali Al Abri, President of Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority.
Mattala draws Omani interest
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport was a key part of the discussion, with Al Abri expressing interest in its current operations and future development potential.
The two officials also discussed ways to increase airline activity between the two countries. This included the possible resumption of direct SriLankan Airlines flights between the two countries.
They also discussed a possible return of Oman Air services between Muscat and Sri Lanka, along with increasing the frequency of existing SalamAir flights.
SalamAir currently operates nonstop services between Colombo and Muscat, with current schedules showing multiple weekly flights.
Adding more flights could support tourism and trade?
More direct flights would give passengers additional travel options while increasing available air capacity between the two markets.
The two sides expect stronger air links to support tourism, trade and business connections, as well as travel between families and communities.
However, the discussions do not yet represent confirmed new routes or flight schedules. Any resumption or increase in services would depend on decisions by the airlines and the relevant aviation authorities.
Oman invites Sri Lankan aviation officials
Al Abri also sought support for a special International Civil Aviation Organization meeting planned in Oman. Sri Lanka agreed to provide the necessary support.
He invited the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, the Deputy Minister, the Ministry Secretary and Rambukwella to visit Oman.
Rambukwella, meanwhile, invited the Chairman of Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority to visit Sri Lanka.
The discussions give both countries a basis for further talks on airline services, airport development and direct air connectivity.
