Sri Lanka and Bhutan are looking to expand cooperation in trade, tourism and air connectivity, following talks between the two countries’ Prime Ministers in Thimphu.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya held a bilateral meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay on September 1 during her visit to Bhutan.
Amarasuriya is visiting Bhutan as the Keynote Speaker at the inaugural Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026.
The meeting focused on building on the longstanding relationship between the two countries and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Division.
The two leaders discussed several areas that could support closer links between the two countries.

These included education, health, trade, tourism, air connectivity and people-to-people contacts.
Air connectivity could help improve travel between the two countries, while closer links in trade and tourism could create new opportunities for businesses and visitors.
The leaders also discussed cooperation on environmental issues.
Both sides exchanged views on dealing with the effects of climate change, combating deforestation, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
The discussions come as both countries look to deepen their existing ties across a wider range of areas.
The Prime Minister’s Media Division said the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to strengthen their friendship and expand mutually beneficial cooperation.
The statement did not announce any specific trade agreements, investment commitments or new air routes following the meeting.
