Sri Lanka Cricket has launched a new programme aimed at strengthening the country’s school cricket system by improving the knowledge and coaching standards of school-level cricket coaches.
The initiative, introduced under the direction of the Cricket Transformation Committee, began with its first session held on May 25 at the SLC High Performance Center, bringing together 74 coaches representing Division 1 and Division 2 schools.
For a country where school cricket continues to serve as the foundation of the national talent pipeline, the programme reflects growing attention on coach development as a key part of producing future players. While school competitions often focus heavily on match results, the latest initiative places greater emphasis on long-term player development and modern coaching practices.
Sri Lanka Men’s Team Head Coach Gary Kirsten led a two-hour session for the participating coaches, sharing insights into modern coaching methods and discussing the role coaches play in nurturing young cricketers.
Kirsten stressed the importance of creating supportive and positive learning environments for children while helping them develop technical skills and discipline in the sport. He also highlighted the need for coaches themselves to continue improving their own knowledge and capabilities.
Rather than focusing only on winning school matches, Kirsten encouraged coaches to prioritise the development of quality cricketers capable of progressing to higher levels of the game.
The programme also featured contributions from National Bowling Coach Ryan van Niekerk and National Fielding and Spin Bowling Coach Jordan Gregory, who shared technical expertise and practical experiences with participants.
Sidath Wettimuny, Chairman of the Cricket Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket and a member of the Cricket Transformation Committee, delivered the opening remarks during the programme.
An interactive question-and-answer session was also held, allowing school coaches to directly engage with Gary Kirsten and the coaching staff.
Sri Lanka Cricket said the programme will continue periodically as part of broader efforts to develop a stronger and more knowledgeable coaching structure within school cricket.
