Sri Lanka Welcomes Over 900,000 Tourists in First Four Months of 2026

Sri Lanka has crossed the 900,000 tourist arrival mark for 2026, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

Sri Lanka has crossed the 900,000 tourist arrival mark for 2026, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

The authority said a total of 904,855 tourists visited the country between January 1 and May 6 this year.

India remained the largest source market, contributing 200,796 visitors during the period.

Large numbers of tourists also arrived from the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, and China.

May Arrivals Continue Despite Slowdown

According to SLTDA data, 28,578 tourists arrived in Sri Lanka during the first six days of May alone.

The tourism industry continues to remain one of the country’s key foreign exchange earners, supporting hotels, restaurants, transport services, tour operators, airlines, retail businesses, and thousands of small tourism-related enterprises.

However, the latest figures also show signs of slowing momentum.

Tourist Numbers Declining After Strong Start

An analysis of arrival trends shows that daily tourist arrivals during April and early May have declined noticeably compared to the stronger numbers recorded during January, February, and March.

Industry observers say several factors may be influencing travel demand, including global economic conditions, regional tensions, rising travel costs, and changing seasonal travel patterns.

Businesses linked to tourism are now closely monitoring upcoming booking trends, especially ahead of the mid-year travel season.

Tourism Industry Remains Critical for Economy

The tourism sector plays a major role in supporting foreign currency inflows and employment across Sri Lanka.

Hotels, guesthouses, transport providers, travel agencies, restaurants, handicraft sellers, and event operators all depend heavily on stable tourist arrivals throughout the year.

Industry experts say maintaining international marketing campaigns, improving travel connectivity, and strengthening visitor confidence will remain important if Sri Lanka hopes to sustain tourism growth in the coming months.
