Kalutara District Team Leader of the National Peoples’ Power (NPP), Nalinda Jayatissa, has laid out an ambitious vision for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector and economic growth in a recent statement. Speaking in Colombo, he announced a target for the tourism industry to generate an income of USD 8.5 billion by 2025, with a strategy to attract four million tourists annually.

Key Highlights:

  • Tourism Expansion: The NPP plans to increase annual tourist arrivals through targeted infrastructure development, expecting to boost tourism income significantly by 2025. Jayatissa emphasized ongoing improvements at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), including construction of a second terminal in collaboration with the Japanese government, to accommodate growing visitor numbers.
  • Investment Climate: Noting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s reputation as the “anti-corruption president,” Jayatissa said this stance is a key factor for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), which is essential for economic growth.
  • Infrastructure and Digitalization: The NPP envisions a fully digitized public service, enabling citizens to access services more efficiently and with ease. Additionally, the government will prioritize rural economic development, welfare expansion, and mega infrastructure projects as part of its commitment to an inclusive economy.
  • Production-Based Economy: Jayatissa outlined plans to foster a production-oriented economy by seeking renowned FDI partners and driving new investment. An anti-corruption initiative will be integral to this economic shift, aiming to ensure transparency and integrity in governance.

Election Outlook:

With confidence in the upcoming General Election, Jayatissa expressed optimism that the NPP will secure eight of the 11 seats in the Kalutara District. His outlook reflects the NPP’s strategic focus on transparency, infrastructure, and economic reforms as key campaign pillars.

As Sri Lanka gears up for potential economic revival, the NPP’s robust agenda underscores its commitment to sustainable growth and modernization, focusing on maximizing the country’s tourism potential and enhancing public sector efficiency through digital transformation.
