As Sri Lanka heads to the polls today, eligible voters are reminded to carry one of the nine accepted forms of identification to cast their vote.
These include:
- National Identity Card (NIC)
- Valid Passport
- Valid Driving License
- Public Service Retirement ID
- Elders Identity Card
- ID Cards provided to clergy
- Confirmation letter of NIC information
- Temporary ID for disabled persons (issued by the Election Commission)
- Temporary ID for others (issued by the Election Commission)
The Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, clarified the voting process, stating that voters can use either an ‘X’ mark or the Arabic numeral ‘1’ to indicate their choice. To express preferences, voters can mark their first, second, and third choices using Arabic numerals ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’, respectively. Other markings will render the ballot invalid.
Additionally, mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside polling stations to maintain the integrity of the voting process.
