The Jaffna International Airport (JIA) marked its 5th anniversary last week, playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s recovering aviation industry. Since its reopening in 2019, JIA has steadily contributed to both international and domestic passenger movements, significantly benefiting the Northern region’s economy.
Key Highlights:
- Passenger Growth: As of September 30, 2024, international passenger movements have increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2023. Aircraft movements have also grown by 22%, while cargo movements have seen a 25% rise.
- Historic Significance: Originally functioning as the Palaly airfield, JIA reopened for international operations in 2019, becoming Sri Lanka’s fourth international airport. It offers scheduled flights connecting Jaffna and Chennai, with operators such as Alliance Air and Indigo.
- Recovery from Pandemic: Despite the halt in operations due to COVID-19, JIA has rebounded strongly. By September 2024, passenger movement stood at 29,583, a sharp rise from 28,396 in 2023. The airport has handled over 60,000 passengers since its reopening.
- Boost to Local Economy: The expansion of JIA has positively impacted the Northern region’s economy, spurring the development of the service industry, especially in aviation, tourism, and hospitality. The rise in tourism, along with the addition of star-class hotels and improved transport infrastructure, has further driven economic growth.
JIA’s continued development has not only enhanced air connectivity but also provided a boost to the regional economy by creating employment opportunities and improving the skills of local youth. This growth is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s GDP.
