Ahead of the 2024 BRICS Leaders’ Summit, the Global South Think Tanks Forum has been held in Beijing. The forum was co-hosted by the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and China Media Group. Meanwhile CGTN organized the gathering. Our reporter Cen Ziyuan has more on the event.
World leaders, officials, and experts from more than 76 countries and regions participated in the Global South Think Tanks Forum in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, attending both on-site and virtually.
They discussed a wide range of topics including peace, development and security.
LIU JIANCHAO Minister of the International Department, CPC Central Committee “As a member of the Global South, China has long stood in solidarity with other fellow Global South countries through thick and thin and has been an advocate for and an important player in South-South cooperation. Going into the future, China will stand united with other Global South countries to shoulder responsibilities and play a key role. Let’s work together to implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative and contribute the strength of the Global South to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.”
The event was hosted by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee and China Media Group and was organized by CGTN.
SHEN HAIXIONG President of China Media Group “We will actively build bridges and connections for dialogue and mutual learning and mutual understanding between China and Global South countries. We will also provide a platform for Global South think tanks to amplify their voices in promoting win-win cooperation and advocating fairness and justice. We stand ready to work with think tanks from the Global South to contribute more to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and to help the world move toward a brighter future of peace, security, prosperity and progress.”
CEN ZIYUAN Beijing “The event was theme ‘Peace, Development, Security: Jointly Build a Prosperous World with a Shared Future.’ Participating bodies also issued an initiative to promote cooperation amongst Global South countries.”
LARISSA WACHHOLZ Co-Founder, Institute of Government Relations (IRELGOV), Senior Fellow, Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) “I’m a great enthusiast of the work of ThinkTanks. As a member of ThinkTanks myself, I really think that we play an important role in sharing knowledge, in promoting dialogue, promoting understanding, especially among countries that are so far away from each other, which is the case for Brazil and China. So we have geographical distance, we have the language issue, a lot of gaps of knowledge that ThinkTanks are the best place for us to build upon.”
SAMUEL AYAMMAH Journalist, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation “I feel so excited because one particular issue that has always affected the Global South has to do with disunity. So this bringing together people of different backgrounds, people of different ideas, it is a knowledge-sharing platform where everybody will bring what he feels is right on board for us to all discuss. So at the end of the day, you arrive at a consensus, you arrive at something that will go a long way to help develop the Global South.”
The Global South Think Tanks Forum will be aired as a special program on CGTN on Friday October 18th.
