The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the implementation of recommendations by the Presidential Expert Committee, chaired by Udaya R. Seneviratne, to address salary discrepancies in the government sector. These recommendations, initiated by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
Under the new policy, basic salaries for public service employees will see substantial increases, ranging from 24% to over 50%. For the lowest ranks, salaries will be increased by at least 24%.
Specific salary adjustments include:
- Office Employees’ Service: Grade III increases by Rs.5,450; Grade II by Rs.8,760; Grade I by Rs.10,950; and Special Grade by Rs.13,980.
- Drivers’ Service: Grade III increases by Rs.6,960; Grade II by Rs.9,990; Grade I by Rs.13,020; and Special Grade by Rs.16,340.
- Samurdhi Development Officers: Grade III increases by Rs.8,340; Grade II by Rs.11,690; and Grade I by Rs.15,685.
- Management Service Officers/Assistants: Grade III increases by Rs.10,140; Grade II by Rs.13,490; and Grade I by Rs.17,550.
- Development Officers: Grade III increases by Rs.12,710; Grade II by Rs.17,820; and Grade I by Rs.25,150.
- Public Health Inspectors and Midwives: Grade III increases by Rs.12,885; Grade II by Rs.17,945; and Grade I by Rs.25,275.
- Pharmacists and Radiographers: Grade III increases by Rs.13,280; Grade II by Rs.18,310; and Grade I by Rs.25,720.
- Nursing Officers: Grade III increases by Rs.13,725; Grade II by Rs.18,835; and Grade I by Rs.26,165.
- Principals’ Service: Grade III increases by Rs.23,425; Grade II by Rs.29,935; and Grade I by Rs.39,595.
- Teaching Service: Salary increase of Rs.17,480 for National College of Education teachers; Rs.19,055 for graduate teachers; Rs.20,425 for Grade II; and Rs.38,020 for Grade I.
- Police Force: Increases include Rs.10,704 for Police Constables, Rs.13,210 for Police Sergeants, Rs.14,050 for Sub-Inspectors, Rs.18,290 for Inspectors, and Rs.23,685 for Chief Inspectors.
- Grama Niladhari: Grade III increases by Rs.11,340; Grade II by Rs.14,690; and Grade I by Rs.18,750; with an Administrative GN officer receiving an increase of Rs.23,575.
- Senior Administrative Positions: Rs.28,885 for Assistant Secretary, Assistant Director, Accountant, Assistant Divisional Secretary, and Assistant Commissioner; Rs.43,865 for Deputy Director and Deputy Commissioner; Rs.57,545 for Divisional Secretary, Director, Commissioner, and Senior Assistant Secretary.
- Medical Professionals: Grade III doctors will receive an increase of Rs.35,560; Grade II by Rs.39,575; Grade I by Rs.53,075; and Specialist Doctors and Additional Secretaries by Rs.70,200.
The new policy also recommends doubling annual salary increments for government employees. It will extend to public corporations, boards, statutory bodies, universities, and the armed forces from January 1, 2025. – PMD
